Why Seatbelts Lock After an Accident

We regularly receive enquiries from customers whose seatbelt has locked after an accident. Many people aren't sure whether the seatbelt can simply be reset or repaired. Unfortunately, crash-damaged seatbelt assemblies are very different from normal wear-and-tear repairs and should be treated as safety-critical components.

Modern seatbelts are designed to protect occupants during a collision. During an impact, the seatbelt retractor may lock and the pretensioner may deploy to hold the occupant firmly in position.

Once this has happened, the seatbelt assembly may no longer be suitable for normal use. Internal components can be stressed, locked or damaged, even if the outside of the belt appears normal.

Do We Repair Accident-Damaged Seatbelts?

No. Melbourne Seatbelt Repairs does not repair accident-damaged seatbelts, crash-locked seatbelts or deployed pretensioners.

If a seatbelt has locked after a collision, been involved in an accident, or has a deployed pretensioner, the safest and correct approach is replacement of the affected assembly.

We do not reset, rebuild or reuse deployed pretensioner assemblies.

When Replacement Is Required

A seatbelt assembly should be replaced if it has been affected by:

• Vehicle collision or crash impact
• Airbag deployment
• Deployed seatbelt pretensioner
• Crash-locked retractor
• Structural damage to mounting points
• Visible damage after an accident
• Any seatbelt that has restrained an occupant during a collision

Why We Do Not Repair Crash-Damaged Seatbelts

Seatbelts are primary safety restraint components. After an accident, there may be internal damage that cannot be reliably assessed from appearance alone.

Because occupant safety comes first, we do not offer repair services for crash-damaged seatbelt assemblies. Replacement is the safest and most responsible option.
