Why Does My Seatbelt Not Work Properly?
Why Does My Seatbelt Not Work Properly?
A seatbelt that doesn't work properly is a safety risk and a roadworthy failure. There are several common reasons why seatbelts malfunction — and understanding the cause helps determine the right fix.
Common Seatbelt Problems and Their Causes
Seatbelt Won't Retract
If your seatbelt won't pull back in when you release it, the most common causes are:
- Twisted or kinked webbing inside the retractor
- Debris or dirt inside the retractor mechanism
- A worn or weakened retractor spring
- Webbing that has been fed back into the retractor incorrectly
Seatbelt Is Locked and Won't Pull Out
A seatbelt that is completely locked and won't extend is often caused by:
- The vehicle being on a steep incline (the inertia lock engages)
- A pretensioner that has been deployed in an accident (permanently locked)
- A faulty or worn locking mechanism inside the retractor
- Twisted webbing jamming the retractor
Seatbelt Feels Loose or Doesn't Lock in a Stop
If your seatbelt doesn't lock when you brake suddenly, the inertia locking mechanism may be faulty or the retractor may be dirty or worn.
Seatbelt Buckle Won't Click or Release
Buckle issues are usually caused by debris inside the buckle mechanism, a worn latch, or a damaged buckle from an accident.
Seatbelt Webbing Is Frayed, Torn or Damaged
Physical damage to the webbing is the most common seatbelt problem. Fraying, cuts, burns and pet damage all compromise the belt's ability to protect you in a collision.
