It is one of the most common questions we receive. The short answer is no — and here is why it will not work, and what to do instead.

This is one of the most common questions we are asked after someone notices their seatbelt starting to fray, has attempted a DIY fix, or has already failed a roadworthy inspection. The lighter trick, the heat gun, the scissors, the glue — none of them work. Here is why.

Why People Try the Lighter Trick
We completely understand why people try this. Nobody wants to replace an expensive safety component if they don’t have to, and the internet is full of DIY suggestions that sound convincing. Someone reads advice online, or a workmate says “just run a lighter over it.” The frayed fibres melt back and the edge looks tidier. At first glance it looks like it worked.
Then it fails the roadworthy inspection anyway — because inspectors are not looking at the edge from a distance. They are checking the condition of the webbing itself.
The other common attempts we see are trimming the frayed edge with scissors, applying glue or tape, or using a heat gun instead of a lighter. The result is the same in every case: the underlying damage remains, and the belt still fails.
We never judge DIY repairs. We understand people are trying to save money, and we would much rather inspect a seatbelt that someone has attempted to repair than have them continue driving with a damaged restraint.

Why the Lighter Trick Does Not Work
Seatbelt webbing is woven polyester. The fibres are what give it strength. When you run a lighter over frayed webbing, you are melting the surface — not repairing the weave. Underneath, the fibres are still broken.

The melted fibres are hardened and discoloured — clearly visible to an inspector and a sign that the webbing has been permanently damaged by heat.
What Roadworthy Inspectors Actually Look For
Inspectors check the full length of the webbing — fraying, cuts, tears, burns, chemical damage and excessive wear. Heat damage from a lighter shows up clearly. There is no DIY method that gets around this. The inspection covers the webbing condition, not just whether it looks tidy from a distance.
Common DIY attempts we see in our workshop: using a lighter, using a soldering iron, cutting the frayed edge with scissors, applying glue, burning loose fibres with a heat gun, or covering damage with tape. None of these fix the webbing. Most make the job harder when the belt eventually comes in for proper repair.

The Right Way to Fix a Frayed Seatbelt
If the damage is limited to the webbing, re-webbing is usually the appropriate option. We remove the old webbing, fit new compliant material, and the existing hardware may be retained where appropriate following inspection. This is generally faster and more cost-effective than replacing the whole assembly.
Before fitting new webbing, we inspect the retractor, hardware and operation of the complete assembly. If the retractor or hardware has issues, or if the damage is too extensive, we explain that clearly before any work is done.
A customer posted us a front seatbelt that had been fraying at the edge for some time. Before sending it in, they had run a lighter along the frayed section to tidy it up. When we inspected the webbing, the heat damage had spread well beyond the original fraying — the fibres were fused and hardened across a wider area than the customer had realised.
