Custom Coloured Seatbelts for NDIS & Disability Transport
Custom Coloured Seatbelts for NDIS & Disability Transport
More than 30 seatbelt webbing colours — so families, carers and support providers can choose what suits the individual best
At Melbourne Seatbelt Repairs, we work with families, carers, disability support providers and transport operators across Australia. One thing we’ve learnt is that there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution. Some customers simply want to match their vehicle’s interior. Others choose a favourite colour because it reflects the passenger’s personality. Some families tell us that allowing a child to choose their own seatbelt colour helps make the vehicle feel more familiar and personal. Every individual is different, which is why we offer more than 30 seatbelt webbing colours.
We inspect every seatbelt assembly before repair and can replace damaged webbing with compliant replacement material while retaining the original hardware where appropriate. The colour of the webbing does not affect the inspection process, the repair standard or the compliance of the finished assembly. Every repair follows exactly the same process regardless of the colour selected.
We work with families, NDIS participants, support workers, occupational therapists, disability transport providers, special schools and community transport operators. If you’re replacing damaged webbing anyway, choosing a colour that suits the individual costs no more than re-webbing in the original black or grey.
A selection of the 30+ webbing colours available. Families, carers and support providers can choose the colour that best suits the individual — from standard black and grey through to red, blue, purple, yellow and more.
Understanding Sensory Preferences
Every person experiences colour differently. Research has shown that many autistic people and people with sensory processing differences have individual colour preferences and may respond differently to colours within their environment. Rather than there being one “best” colour, current research suggests that preferences are highly individual.
That’s why we offer a wide range of seatbelt webbing colours. Whether you’re choosing a favourite colour, matching a vehicle interior or creating a more personalised environment, the choice is yours.
Research has found that colour preferences in autistic children can differ from those of typically developing children, while reviews of sensory-friendly design consistently emphasise that responses to colour vary between individuals and environments. See the Research & Further Reading section below for sources.
Why Colour Choice Can Matter
For this reason, many families prefer having the opportunity to choose a colour that reflects the individual’s own preferences rather than accepting only the standard factory black or grey webbing.
Choice Matters
For many people, a vehicle is simply transport.
For others, it’s a place they spend hours every week travelling to school, appointments, work or community activities.
Being able to personalise part of that environment — whether that’s choosing a favourite seatbelt colour, matching an existing interior or creating a look that feels familiar — is something many families value.
We believe there shouldn’t be just one colour available when replacing damaged seatbelt webbing.
Popular Colour Choices
| Colour | Popular With |
|---|---|
| Red | A strong, high-contrast colour — popular with families who want a bold, easily identifiable belt. Also popular for custom builds and performance vehicles |
| Blue | One of the most frequently requested colours — popular across a wide range of vehicles and individual preferences |
| Purple | A popular choice for families and individuals with a strong colour preference — particularly popular for personalised disability vehicles |
| Yellow | A high-visibility colour — popular for community transport and vehicles where belt visibility is a practical consideration |
| Green | Popular for nature-themed interiors and individual colour preferences |
| Orange | A warm, high-contrast colour — popular for custom builds and individual preference |
| Grey | A neutral alternative to black — popular where a subtle change from the factory colour is preferred |
| Black | The standard factory colour for most vehicles — always available and the most common re-webbing choice |
Blue re-webbing on a completed assembly. Custom colours are available across all vehicle types — the same compliant webbing, the same inspection process, the same repair standard.
Orange re-webbing — one of the more distinctive colour choices. Available for all vehicle types including wheelchair-accessible vehicles and disability transport.
Our Approach
We don’t claim that changing the colour of a seatbelt provides a medical or therapeutic benefit. Every individual is different. Our goal is simply to give families, carers and support providers more choice when replacing damaged seatbelt webbing.
If choosing a favourite colour helps make a vehicle feel more personal or familiar, we’re happy to help make that possible.
If your seatbelt webbing is already damaged, frayed or failing a compliance inspection, choosing a custom colour adds a personalisation option at no extra cost over a standard re-webbing job.
The re-webbing process is the same regardless of colour — the damaged webbing is removed entirely and replaced with new compliant material. If you’re already paying for a re-webbing repair, upgrading to a preferred colour costs no more than re-webbing in the original colour. It’s worth considering if the individual has a strong colour preference.
Working with Occupational Therapists
If an OT or support coordinator is helping a family think through vehicle personalisation as part of everyday participation, we can provide information on the re-webbing process, available colours and turnaround times to assist with planning.

Safety Always Comes First
Regardless of the colour selected, every repair follows exactly the same inspection process. Before any re-webbing is carried out, we assess the complete assembly:
- Retractor operation and retraction strength
- Ribbon spring condition — tension, clip position, contamination
- Inertia locking mechanism function
- Pretensioner status — whether it has deployed or remains intact
- Full length of the webbing — fraying, cuts, contamination, UV degradation
- Buckle condition and release operation
- Mounting hardware and anchor points
If replacement is required rather than re-webbing, we’ll explain why before any work begins. The colour of the webbing does not affect this assessment.
The webbing we use is manufactured to AS/NZS 2596 requirements regardless of colour. Choosing a custom colour does not affect the compliance, strength or safety of the finished assembly. Every repair is inspected before and after completion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose any colour for my seatbelt?
Yes — subject to availability. We stock more than 30 colours including red, blue, purple, yellow, green, orange, grey and black. Confirm your preferred colour is in stock before booking. Browse the full colour range.
Do coloured seatbelts meet the same safety standards?
Yes. The webbing we use is manufactured to AS/NZS 2596 requirements regardless of colour. The colour of the webbing does not affect its compliance, strength or safety.
Can every vehicle have coloured webbing?
In most cases, yes. We inspect the complete assembly before advising on re-webbing suitability. If the retractor or hardware is not suitable for re-webbing, we’ll advise you clearly before any work begins.
Can I choose different colours for each seat?
Yes. Each seatbelt can be re-webbed in a different colour if preferred. Some families choose a specific colour for the individual’s seat and retain the original colour for other positions.
Do you work with NDIS participants?
Yes. We work with NDIS participants, families and support workers across Australia. Our mail-in service means location is no barrier — remove the seatbelt assembly, post it to our Carrum Downs workshop and we’ll re-web and return it via Express Post.
Do you work with disability transport providers?
Yes. We work with disability transport operators, community transport providers, special schools and wheelchair-accessible transport fleets. Fleet pricing is available on request.
Do you work with occupational therapists?
Yes. We regularly work with families who have discussed vehicle modifications with their OT or support team. We can provide information on the re-webbing process, available colours and turnaround times to assist with planning.
Is this service available for adults, not just children?
Yes. Sensory preferences are not limited to children. We work with children, teenagers and adults who have strong individual colour preferences for their vehicle, as well as the families, carers and support workers who assist them.
Will a custom colour seatbelt pass a compliance inspection?
Yes. The colour of the webbing is not assessed during a roadworthy or compliance inspection — the condition of the webbing is. New compliant webbing in any colour addresses the webbing condition aspect of the inspection in the same way as standard black or grey.
How much does custom colour re-webbing cost?
Custom colour re-webbing is the same price as standard re-webbing — from $165 when the assembly is already removed and only the webbing requires replacement. Contact us for a specific quote.
Can I post my seatbelt to you from interstate?
Yes. We offer Australia-wide mail-in re-webbing. Remove the seatbelt assembly, pack it securely and post it to our Carrum Downs workshop. We’ll re-web in your chosen colour and return it via Express Post within 24 hours of receipt.

Research & Further Reading
At Melbourne Seatbelt Repairs, we believe in providing accurate information. Our custom coloured seatbelt service is intended to offer greater choice and vehicle personalisation when replacing damaged seatbelt webbing. While research suggests that colour preferences and sensory responses can differ between individuals, there is currently no evidence that a particular seatbelt colour provides a therapeutic or medical benefit. Every person is unique, and colour selection remains a personal preference.
