A customer posted us a driver’s seatbelt from a Toyota LandCruiser that had been used for regular outback touring. The webbing had faded from black to a washed-out grey-brown and had become noticeably stiff to the touch. On inspection, the webbing showed signs of UV brittleness and the retractor was also retracting slowly due to fine dust contamination inside the mechanism.
Both the webbing and the retractor were addressed before the assembly was returned. The customer chose to upgrade to orange webbing at the same time, which we accommodated on the same job.
It is a good example of why faded webbing should be inspected as a complete assembly — the retractor issue would not have been visible from the outside, and the webbing was more degraded than it appeared.
