Quick Answer

In most cases where the webbing is frayed, torn, faded, dog-chewed, burnt or soiled, professional re-webbing is a safe and roadworthy alternative to full seatbelt replacement. The damaged webbing is removed entirely and replaced with new compliant material — the retractor, hardware and buckle are retained where they are in suitable condition.

Re-webbing is significantly less expensive than a full replacement through a dealership or parts supplier, and there is no waiting for parts to be sourced or ordered. Most jobs are completed within 24 hours.

We inspect every assembly before any repair decision is made. If replacement is the right answer — for example, where a pretensioner has deployed or hardware is damaged — we will tell you that clearly before any work is carried out.

From the Workshop

"The most common situation we see is a customer who has been quoted several hundred dollars for a replacement seatbelt through a dealership, often for damage that is limited to the webbing. In the majority of those cases, re-webbing is a suitable and significantly less expensive alternative. We inspect the retractor, hardware and buckle before confirming that — but in most cases, those components are in perfectly good condition and only the webbing needs to be replaced."

What We Commonly See

These are the most common situations where customers contact us after being quoted for a full replacement. In most of these cases, re-webbing is a suitable alternative.

Situation What It Usually Means
Quoted for replacement after a roadworthy failure Most roadworthy failures are due to webbing condition — fraying, fading or visible damage. Where the retractor and hardware are in good condition, re-webbing is typically a suitable and less expensive alternative.
Webbing frayed, torn or cut Damaged webbing is the most common reason for a replacement quote. In most cases, the retractor and hardware are unaffected and re-webbing is the appropriate repair.
Dog-chewed or pet-damaged webbing Pet damage is one of the most common repairs we carry out. The retractor and hardware are almost always in good condition. Re-webbing is typically the right repair.
Faded or UV-degraded webbing on an older vehicle Replacement parts for older vehicles are often discontinued or expensive to source. Re-webbing restores the belt with new compliant material regardless of the vehicle’s age or make.
Soiled or stained webbing Soiling that cannot be cleaned is a webbing-only issue. Re-webbing replaces the webbing entirely and is significantly less expensive than a full assembly replacement.

"In most cases where the webbing is damaged, re-webbing is a safe, roadworthy and significantly less expensive alternative to full seatbelt replacement. We inspect every assembly and advise honestly before any work is carried out."

Why Customers Choose Us

We specialise only in seatbelts. We are not a general mechanic that occasionally repairs a belt between other jobs. Because seatbelts are the only thing we do, we have seen almost every type of webbing damage on almost every vehicle make and model sold in Australia.

Every week, assemblies arrive in our workshop from:

Toyota Ford Mazda Mercedes-Benz Land Rover Holden Isuzu Nissan Hyundai BMW Audi Volkswagen Mitsubishi Subaru Kia Jeep Volvo Lexus ...and dozens more

That experience means we know quickly whether re-webbing is suitable or whether replacement is genuinely required. We do not recommend re-webbing where it is not appropriate — and we do not recommend replacement where re-webbing will do the job correctly.

When replacement may be required: Re-webbing is not suitable for every situation. If a pretensioner has deployed in a collision, if the retractor mechanism is mechanically faulty, or if the buckle or hardware is damaged, replacement of the affected components may be required. We inspect every assembly and advise clearly before any work is carried out.

How the Repair Process Works

1

Send Us a Photo

Contact us with a photo of the damage. We will advise on whether re-webbing is suitable and provide a quote before you commit to anything.

2

Drop In or Mail Your Seatbelt

Bring your vehicle to our Carrum Downs workshop, or have the seatbelt removed and post it to us. If you bring the seatbelt in already removed, we can typically re-web it within 20–25 minutes while you wait.

3

We Inspect the Complete Assembly

Before any repair, we inspect the webbing, retractor, hardware and operation of the complete assembly. We confirm whether re-webbing is suitable and advise if any other components need attention.

4

New Webbing Fitted

Damaged webbing removed entirely and replaced with new compliant material in your chosen colour. Walk-in jobs with pre-removed belts typically take 20–25 minutes. Mail-in seatbelts returned securely packaged via Express Post, usually within 24 hours of arriving.

A customer contacted us after being quoted over $400 for a replacement rear seatbelt assembly through a Toyota dealership. The belt had been chewed by their dog and the dealership had advised that the complete assembly needed to be replaced.

On inspection, the retractor was operating normally and the hardware was in good condition. The damage was limited to the webbing. We re-webbed the assembly with new black compliant material. The customer had the seatbelt removed before posting it to us — it arrived, was re-webbed and returned via Express Post the following business day.

Re-webbing is not always the answer — but in most cases where the damage is limited to the webbing, it is the appropriate and significantly less expensive repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is re-webbing as safe as a full replacement?

Where the assembly is suitable for re-webbing — meaning the retractor, hardware and buckle are in good condition — re-webbing with new compliant material restores the belt to full safety specification. We inspect every assembly before confirming suitability. If any component is not suitable, we advise replacement of that component before proceeding.

Will a re-webbed seatbelt pass a roadworthy inspection?

Where the assembly is suitable for repair and new compliant webbing is fitted, the repaired belt is intended to meet roadworthy requirements. A roadworthy outcome is ultimately determined by the inspecting licensed vehicle tester. We advise clearly on the condition of the assembly before any work is carried out.

My dealership said the whole assembly needs to be replaced. Is that always true?

Not always. In many cases, a dealership will quote for a full replacement assembly because that is the standard parts-based approach. Where the damage is limited to the webbing and the retractor and hardware are in good condition, re-webbing is a suitable and significantly less expensive alternative. We inspect every assembly and advise honestly before any work is carried out.

What if my vehicle is old and the parts are discontinued?

Re-webbing is particularly useful for older vehicles where replacement parts are discontinued or difficult to source. We re-web the existing assembly with new compliant material, which means the original retractor and hardware are retained. We service all vehicle makes and models regardless of age.

How much does re-webbing cost compared to replacement?

Re-webbing is significantly less expensive than a full replacement through a dealership or parts supplier. The exact cost depends on the vehicle and the repair required. Contact us with a photo of the damage and we will provide a quote before you commit to anything.

When is full replacement actually necessary?

Full replacement of the affected components may be required where a pretensioner has deployed in a collision, where the retractor mechanism is mechanically faulty, or where the buckle or hardware is damaged. We inspect every assembly and advise clearly before any work is carried out. We do not recommend re-webbing where it is not appropriate.
